Whitehouse Common Primary School - U.K.

WCPS began its conscious path to international activity in 2006 with eTwinning, winning a UK eTwinning award in 2007-8. An inspection commented on the way that children were developing an international perspective after a lesson in which traditions in England and Spain were compared was observed. Additionally, the International Coordinator, Lisa Stevens, became an eTwinning Ambassador and began to share the results of the project (and the value of eTwinning) on a national/international) scale. The school has been involved in many further eTwinning projects since including five this year. In 2009-11 WCPS was one of 2 Birmingham schools involved in the Comenius Regio project between Birmingham and Barcelona, a transformational point in our journey as reciprocal visits, and a close partnership with Els Pins, excited, inspired and empowered staff in their teaching, and pupils not only saw a real purpose to Spanish learning but also began to empathise and interact in a real purposeful way with people of another country and culture. This continued with a Connecting Classrooms project with Mexico 2014-16 which added a new dimension to Spanish. Likewise, a Connecting Classrooms partnership with Bawa Lalwani school, India 2011 - 14 added another dimension to international work at Whitehouse Common with several reciprocal visits. WCPS has been a Global Learning Partnership Expert Centre, and was awarded the Full International Schools Award in 2011 and 2016: this year we are seeking REACCREDITATION for a 3rd time! We believe in No Outsiders and we are proud that our school celebrates and values diversity of language, culture, heritage and experience. We also believe that there is more than unites us than divides us. Lisa Stevens is our International Coordinator and leads our eTwinning and other international work. She is a British Council Ambassador as well as a nationally recognised expert on primary language learning, and brings lots of experience of projects (see above) However, other members of staff have also been involved in projects including Jane Slassor, Harriet Turley and Lisa McIntosh, and their support will be valuable. In addition, class teachers will support the project, working with their classes to collaborate with others. The two contact persons will be replaced by Ms McIntosh and Ms Turley in case of withdrawal.
