Tasting” each other’s customs

On the first of March Greek people and especially children wear a white and red bracelet made of twisted pieces of thread, it is called Μαρτάκι or Mάρτης/ Martis. According to tradition, the people who wear this bracelet are said to be protected from the spring sun.  March bracelet custom has its roots in Ancient Greece, and specifically in the Eleusinian Mysteries, where people tied a thread (the Crocus) on their right hand and their left foot. March took its name from the Latin name of the god Mars (Mars = Mars). It is the first month of the Roman calendar and corresponds to month “Elafivolion” of the Ancient Greeks. In Byzantium they celebrated the first of March with great activities. The Greek partners shared this custom with their Erasmus+ partners and teachers and students form different schools prepared their own bracelets with great creativity and enthusiasm!
